Walailak University received the flag to host the 52nd University Games of Thailand, “Tumpang Games,” taking over from Maejo University. It is preparing to welcome student-athletes from over 100 institutions nationwide in late January next year.

On January 9, 2026, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, led a team of university executives, staff, and students to receive the hosting flag for the 52nd University Games of Thailand. The flag was presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Choosit Pradabpet, Chairman of the University Sports Board of Thailand, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Weerapon Thongma, President of Maejo University, during the opening ceremony of the 51st University Games of Thailand, “Inthanin Games,” at the Chaloem Phrakiat Sports Center, Maejo University, Chiang Mai.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong stated that Walailak University is fully prepared in terms of competition venues, standard sports fields and gymnasiums, facilities, staff, students, and management systems. The university is ready to welcome athletes, officials, and related persons from institutions nationwide, ensuring their convenience, safety, and a memorable experience. “We are committed to carrying on the spirit of this competition, making it an event of friendship, unity, and sports development towards higher standards.” He also invited athletes, officials, and attendees to spend their free time exploring the most beautiful campus in Thailand. Highlights include various check-in points, the Sirindhorn Museum, and the Southern Arts and Culture Learning Center, home to the Tumpang Archaeological Site dating back to the 12th-13th Buddhist Century, which inspired the name “Tumpang Games.”

The 52nd University Games of Thailand, “Tumpang Games,” is scheduled to be held from January 21-30, 2027, under the concept “Spirit of Equality, Glory of Excellence.” The event will feature compulsory sports, international optional sports, general optional sports, demonstration sports, and Thai sports, totaling over 30 sports disciplines.
