Festive Songkran Celebrations! Walailak University Hosts “Walailak Songkran: Preserving Traditions 2025” with a Blessing Ceremony for the Elderly

Walailak University, together with surrounding communities, organized the annual event “Walailak Songkran: Preserving Traditions” for 2025, featuring a traditional water-pouring ceremony to honor the elderly and bestow blessings for the Thai New Year.

On April 9, 2025, Walailak University, through the Center for Cultural and Sports Promotion, in collaboration with the Academic Service Center, Walailak Demonstration Community Health Promoting Hospital, Moo 6 Community of Hua Taphan Subdistrict, Moo 8 Community of Thaiburi Subdistrict, and various university units, held the “Walailak Songkran: Preserving Traditions” at the Atrium of the School of Architecture and Design. The event was presided over by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, who delivered blessings to participants. The ceremony was also attended by administrators, faculty members, staff, students, honored guests, community leaders, and many elderly members of the surrounding communities.

The program featured a blessing ceremony for the elderly from nearby communities, Buddhist rituals and a Buddha image bathing ceremony for auspiciousness, student performances from Chumchonmai School, as well as cultural activities such as traditional circle dances and long drum performances. Special awards were presented for “Healthy Senior of the Year” and “Best Dancing Senior of the Year.” In addition, food stalls from various university departments provided refreshments to participants, adding to the festive atmosphere.

On this occasion, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong emphasized that organizing Songkran activities reflects the preservation of Thailand’s cherished traditions that symbolize gratitude, unity, and social harmony. The event also strengthens the bond between the university and its surrounding communities, aligning with the university’s vision of being “the pillar of the local community” while promoting cultural heritage as a foundation for sustainable social and economic development. He concluded by wishing everyone happiness, prosperity, and good health throughout the Thai New Year.
